Don’t forget to put some tomatoes up for winter use!
I just set up a new webpage on Classic Italian Tomato-Based Sauces. Basically I gathered and typed up a set of recipes that we make all the time – especially during the fall and winter, using tomatoes that we diced up and froze during the late summer months. And I had to include the meat balls as well!
It was another late year for tomatoes here in Warwick, NY. We had a coolish and dampish summer and although the tomato vines got lots of green fruits, they simply weren’t ripening. I think it has a lot to do with the nighttime temperatures. We kept getting down into the low 50’s for several weeks in a row.
But lately the nighttime temperatures are staying nice and warm and the days are hot and dry and all of the sudden the tomatoes have started to ripen. So it is officially time to start celebrating the merriment of tomato harvesting! I just finished a new webpage called Merry Tomatoes with four excellent recipes for using fresh tomatoes – and using them in a way that truly celebrates the flavor and zip of home grown organic heirloom tomato flavor!
Check it out here and please ENJOY! Tomato season is short!!
